CPU Reminds Community to Call 811 Before Digging

Simple step helps prevent accidents, outages and costly repairs

Before starting any project that involves digging—whether planting a tree, installing a fence or tackling a home improvement—residents and contractors are urged to call 811. This free service helps locate underground utility lines and prevents accidental damage that could be costly, dangerous or disruptive.

“Calling 811 is a proactive step that safeguards public safety and protects our community’s underground infrastructure,” said Curtis D. Boschert, CPU general manager. “Even small projects can have serious consequences if buried utility lines are struck. It is essential that everyone takes this responsibility seriously.”

State law requires Mississippians to call 811 at least three business days before digging or to submit an online request at https://call811.com. The Mississippi 811 center will then notify local utility operators, who will mark buried lines on the property using color-coded paint, flags, or stakes:

  • Red: Electric
  • Yellow: Gas, oil, or steam
  • Orange: Communications
  • Blue: Water
  • Green: Sewer
  • Pink: Temporary survey markings
  • White: Proposed excavation

CPU also follows the 811 process before performing any work to repair waterlines, sewer lines, or electrical infrastructure.

If a professional contractor is performing work that involves digging, ensure they have called 811 or submitted a request online before beginning. Once all buried lines are marked, property owners and contractors should dig carefully around utility marks and consider relocating projects that come too close to buried lines.

The Mississippi 811 center, based in Pearl, serves as a statewide communications link between excavators, builders, contractors, and private citizens and the owners of underground facilities. This non-profit organization is funded by member utility companies that operate or maintain underground infrastructure across the state.

“Calling 811 is not optional,” Boschert added. “It is a simple step that protects lives, prevents costly damage and ensures the reliability of our utility services for the entire community.”
