An Investment in Clarksdale’s Future

Clarksdale Public Utilities has always strived to keep rates as low as possible while providing essential services to power our community. Affordable service is part of our mission and will always be a defining factor in our commitment to customers.

While CPU works hard to control costs, we also have recognized that continuing to operate at revenue levels that don’t reflect the impacts of inflation will eventually lead to serious challenges for our utility systems and our customers—and that’s a possibility we cannot afford.

With a focus on the future, the CPU Board of Commissioners recently approved a modest rate increase—the first in 10 years—to ensure that Clarksdale residents are served with safe, reliable and affordable utilities for years to come. The increase will be reflected in bills starting April 17.

For most customers, the adjustment raised monthly utility bills by around $8.50 while generating funds to cover rising prices for supplies and operating costs. Even with the adjustment, CPU customers pay less for electric, water and sewer services than other area providers.

In recent years, CPU has seen costs rise for everything from poles, transformers and power lines to fuel, water treatment chemicals and other everyday needs. In addition, transmission rates charged by CPU’s electricity suppliers have more than tripled.

These purchases are not optional; without them, CPU could not continue providing the high-quality services you expect and investing in infrastructure upgrades to prepare Clarksdale for the future.
