CPU Expands Reliability Efforts with Tree Trimming Initiative

Proactive vegetation management builds on years of infrastructure investments

Clarksdale Public Utilities is continuing its commitment to reliable service with the launch of a tree trimming initiative designed to protect power infrastructure, reduce outage risks and build on the utility’s strong reliability performance.

The project, expected to last approximately six week depending on weather, is part of CPU’s ongoing focus on strengthening the electric system through proactive maintenance and strategic investments. Crews will focus on clearing vegetation near distribution and transmission lines, helping reduce the likelihood of outages caused by trees, limbs and other environmental factors.

CPU has contracted with Colburn’s Tree Service, an experienced tree trimming company, to complete the work. Crews will use specialized equipment to safely trim trees and maintain clear rights-of-way around critical electric infrastructure.

“Reliable service does not happen by accident — it is the result of planning, investment and ongoing maintenance,” said CPU General Manager Curtis D. Boschert. “Our reliability numbers reflect the hard work of our team and the investments we have made across the system. This project is another proactive step to protect that progress and continue improving the service our customers count on every day.”

CPU’s vegetation management program is conducted on a rotating schedule to ensure trees and rights-of-way across the entire system are maintained. The program helps prevent outages caused by falling branches, overgrown vegetation and contact with power lines while supporting the long-term health of the electric system.

The project also includes maintenance along transmission lines, where crews will use large boom-mounted saws to keep vegetation away from critical infrastructure. CPU follows tree care and safety standards established by the American National Standards Institute to ensure trimming is completed responsibly and effectively.

Since 2018, CPU has invested approximately $2 million in reliability-focused improvements, including pole replacements, tree trimming, new switches and lightning mitigation projects.

These efforts are designed to strengthen the system, reduce service interruptions and prepare the utility for future technology and infrastructure needs.

“Every improvement we make is focused on one goal — providing our customers with safe, dependable and affordable service,” Boschert said. “Whether it is replacing aging equipment, improving our response capabilities or maintaining our rights-of-way, we are constantly working to make our system stronger.”

Vegetation management also helps reduce wildlife-related outages caused by animals, including squirrels and birds, coming into contact with energized equipment. CPU continues to install protective materials and devices throughout the system to further minimize these risks.

CPU encourages customers to consider utility lines when planting trees or landscaping. Trees planted near power lines should have a mature height of less than 15 feet to reduce future conflicts with infrastructure and help maintain reliable service.

“As we continue investing in our system, our vegetation managment initiative represents our commitment to building a stronger future for Clarksdale,” Boschert said. “We are proud of the progress we have made, and we remain focused on delivering the reliable service our customers deserve for generations to come.”
