CPU Encourages Customers to Take Simple Steps this Summer

With higher temps on the way, small changes now can lead to big savings later

With another Mississippi summer bringing rising temperatures and higher energy demand, Clarksdale Public Utilities is encouraging customers to take proactive steps now to keep homes comfortable while managing utility costs.

Through its annual Simple Steps initiative, CPU is sharing practical energy-saving tips to help customers reduce unnecessary energy use during the hottest months of the year without sacrificing comfort.

“Summer heat can place a strain on both household budgets and cooling systems,” said CPU General Manager Curtis D. Boschert. “At CPU, we want customers to know there are simple, affordable things they can do right now that can make a meaningful difference on their monthly bills. Helping our community stay safe, comfortable and informed is part of the service we provide every day.”

CPU recommends customers begin with a few small adjustments around the home that can improve energy efficiency and reduce cooling costs:

  • Set thermostats wisely. The Department of Energy recommends setting thermostats at 78 degrees when home and higher when away. Even small adjustments can reduce energy use over time.
  • Use ceiling fans correctly. Fans circulate cool air and can make rooms feel several degrees cooler, allowing customers to rely less on air conditioning. Be sure to turn fans off when rooms are unoccupied.
  • Change air filters regularly. Dirty filters force HVAC systems to work harder, increasing energy consumption and reducing airflow. Replacing filters routinely can improve efficiency and indoor comfort.
  • Keep heat outside. Closing blinds, curtains and shades during the hottest parts of the day can block unwanted heat from entering the home.
  • Avoid heat-producing chores during peak afternoon hours. Using ovens, dishwashers and clothes dryers in the evening can reduce indoor heat buildup and lessen the demand on cooling systems.
  • Seal air leaks. Caulking or weather stripping around windows and doors prevents cool air from escaping and warm air from entering.
  • Schedule an HVAC inspection. Having a licensed technician inspect and service cooling systems before peak summer temperatures can help systems run more efficiently and prevent unexpected breakdowns.

Simple habits like lowering the water heater temperature to 120 degrees, washing full loads of laundry and dishes and shortening shower times also can contribute to noticeable savings over the course of the summer. When combined with other efficiency measures, those small changes can add up.

CPU also encourages customers to take advantage of programs that make billing more manageable throughout the year, including Levelized Billing and Pick-A-Due Date.

“Our goal is not only to provide reliable service, but also to help customers better manage energy use and avoid surprises during periods of extreme weather,” Boschert said. “We care deeply about the people we serve, and we want families to know CPU is here as a partner and resource.”
