Most residents don’t see it—but at Clarksdale Public Utilities, work never stops to keep electricity, water, and wastewater services running without interruption.

Providing these essential services isn’t an 8-to-5 job—it’s a 24/7 commitment that requires coordination, expertise and a deep sense of responsibility. “Honestly, if people aren’t thinking about us, that usually means we’re doing our job,” said CPU Plant Manager Mike Vonallman. “Our goal is for everything to work smoothly without interruption—and that takes constant attention behind the scenes.”

At CPU, that work never stops. The utility’s dispatch center operates around the clock, monitoring systems and conditions in real time. In the middle of the night, dispatchers track conditions, field calls and direct crews—often before the city even notices an issue. This constant oversight allows teams to respond immediately and resolve problems quickly.

At any hour, crews are in the field responding to service calls, making repairs and carrying out planned upgrades that improve reliability and efficiency. Whether repairing a water main, trimming trees near power lines or maintaining critical infrastructure, every task plays a role in keeping Clarksdale running smoothly.

“Our crews take a lot of pride in what they do,” said CPU General Manager Curtis D. Boschert. “It’s a level of commitment most people never have to think about—and that’s by design. When everything works as it should, it means CPU crews have been doing their job all along.”
