CPU Protecting Water Quality Through Lead and Copper Testing

Testing ensures Clarksdale’s drinking water meets state and federal safety standards

Delivering safe, healthy, compliant drinking water is a vital part of Clarksdale Public Utilities’ mission as a trusted provider of essential public utilities.

CPU backs up its commitment through routine sampling and testing programs to ensure Clarksdale’s drinking water system complies with state and federal guidelines, including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Lead and Copper Rule.

What sets the Lead and Copper Rule program apart from others is its reliance on customer cooperation. Every three years, CPU is required to obtain samples from residences’ internal water taps to test for copper and lead, with locations determined by the Mississippi State Department of Health.

Samples tested in December 2024 were all within federal limits and shown to be safe to drink.

“CPU continuously monitors the quality and safety of our drinking water through our partnership with the State Department of Health, and historically, we have maintained a strong compliance record,” said CPU General Manager Curtis D. Boschert. “We want customers to know we take violations seriously and are working to maintain full compliance with the Lead and Copper Rule and all requirements that support public health and safety.”

As part of its mission to serve customers, CPU prioritizes trust and transparency. The utility publishes an annual Consumer Confidence Report that focuses on drinking water quality and notifies customers of violations when they occur.

In 2027, CPU and MSDH will conduct the next cycle of drinking water sample collections to test for lead and copper. CPU asks for customers’ cooperation to ensure MSDH receives all requested samples in a timely manner to meet program requirements and avoid violations.

“Our water resources are at the heart of our community, our quality of life and our future,” Boschert said. “CPU will work closely with customers during the sample collection process to make sure Clarksdale’s drinking water is fully tested and evaluated according to federal requirements. As always, 100% compliance is our goal.”
