Customers of Clarksdale Public Utilities are experiencing exceptional service reliability thanks to the utility's renewed focus on planning, maintenance and enhancement of its electrical system.
Since 2018, CPU has invested some $2 million in various projects designed to keep the lights on for customers. These include replacing poles, trimming trees, installing new switches and mitigating lightning strikes—all aimed at minimizing outages, improving service and laying the foundation for future technologies.
“Delivering safe, reliable and affordable power is a commitment we take pride in every day,” said Curtis D. Boschert, CPU general manager. “Our team is focused on maintaining and improving our system, ensuring that customers can depend on us both now and in the future.”
Electric utilities track key indicators of reliability, such as outage frequency and duration. In 2023, CPU customers averaged fewer minutes of outage time compared to the year before and well below the industry benchmark of 100 minutes, which is considered excellent. In fact, CPU’s reliability performance is among the highest in the state.
To maintain this level, CPU crews have been working proactively in Clarksdale neighborhoods. As part of the utility’s reconductor project, they have installed over 74,000 feet—or about 14 miles—of new wire, replaced 220 switches and upgraded some 35 poles. These upgrades help to quickly address issues when they arise and allow for faster power rerouting.
Additionally, CPU continues its vegetation management program, which trims trees and clears rights-of-way every four years across the entire system. This reduces the likelihood of outages caused by falling trees and branches. Crews also are focusing on transmission lines, using large, boom-mounted saws to keep trees away from critical infrastructure.
“Our employees work year-round to stay on schedule with tree trimming while also addressing problem areas as they arise,” said Boschert. “Their dedication is delivering real results, and our customers are noticing. We appreciate the feedback and encourage everyone to let us know if they spot trees growing dangerously close to power lines.”
Trimming trees also helps prevent animals, like squirrels and birds, from coming into contact with energized equipment—another common cause of outages. To further minimize wildlife damage, CPU has installed protective materials and devices on poles and equipment.
“As we continue to invest in our electrical system, our New Generations initiative is key to meeting Clarksdale’s needs,” said Boschert. “We have a long history of serving this community, and we are committed to continuing that legacy so our children and grandchildren will have a great place to live and work.”
