Fight Winter’s Chill Without Heating Up Your Utility Bill

Simple steps help you work smarter, not harder to combat the cold

Falling leaves and falling temperatures mean Clarksdale Public Utilities customers are relying more on their heating systems to stay comfortable. While higher bills are normal this time of year, CPU is helping customers improve energy efficiency and lower heating expenses through its Simple Steps initiative.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, heating systems consume more energy than any other system in the home — making up nearly 30% of the typical utility bill. But small adjustments can add up to significant savings, such as sealing cracks, setting thermostats and taking advantage of the sun’s natural warmth.

“Keeping homes and businesses comfortable during cold weather is a given, but breaking the bank does not have to be part of the equation,” said Curtis D. Boschert, CPU general manager. “Through Simple Steps, we provide a number of simple, low-cost strategies to help our customers reduce energy expenses while staying comfortable.”

CPU recommends that customers focus on making their homes more energy efficient overall by taking these easy and inexpensive steps:

Check the System

  • Schedule a professional heating system checkup if you haven’t already done so.

Set the Thermostat

  • Save energy in the winter by setting the thermostat to 68°F or the lowest comfortable temperature. Layer with sweaters or blankets as needed to feel cozy and warm.
  • Use a programmable thermostat, if possible.
  • If away from home for several days, decrease the thermostat to 55 degrees to keep your heating system from using unneeded energy.

Reduce Waste

  • Add caulk or weatherstripping to seal air leaks around doors and windows.
  • Unplug electronics when away from home. Some devices use energy even when they are turned off.
  • Close the damper on fireplaces when not in use.
  • Wrap your electric water heater with a water heater blanket and set the thermostat to 120 degrees or medium.

Maximize Airflow

  • Check air and furnace filters every 30 days or as required by the type of filter. Clean or replace them as needed.
  • Do not block heat registers or air returns with curtains or furniture.
  • Ensure fans are turning the right way for the season. In winter, fans should be run at a low speed clockwise to help keep cold air from blowing downward.

Let in the Sun

  • Open drapes during the day to let in sunlight and close them at night to reduce heat loss.
  • Keep all doors and windows closed when the heat is on.
“Working smarter, not harder is the best way to combat extreme temperatures and our Simple Steps program helps customers do just that,” said Boschert. “Being energy efficient not only reduces energy burdens and improves comfort, but helps lessen the strain on monthly budgets … something everyone can appreciate when balancing household needs.”
