CPU Launches Tree Trimming Project to Boost Reliability and Minimize Outages

Six-week initiative supports CPU’s New Generations focus on system upgrades and reliability

CLARKSDALE – As storms grow more frequent and severe, Clarksdale Public Utilities is taking proactive steps to protect power lines and improve service reliability through a six-week tree trimming project. The work is part of the utility’s New Generations initiative to modernize infrastructure and minimize service disruptions for customers.

CPU has contracted with Looks Great Services, a trusted partner with whom it has worked for many years. Crews will focus on clearing vegetation from distribution and transmission lines to reduce the risk of outages caused by falling limbs and overgrown trees.

“Tree trimming is a critical part of maintaining reliable service, especially as we continue to see stronger storms impacting our area,” said CPU General Manager Curtis D. Boschert. “By investing in preventative maintenance like this, we’re protecting the system, saving time and money, and helping our customers avoid the inconvenience and cost of unexpected outages.”

CPU conducts its vegetation management program, which trims trees and clears rights-of-way every four years across the entire system. This reduces the likelihood of outages caused by falling trees and branches. Crews also are focusing on transmission lines, using large, boom-mounted saws to keep trees away from critical infrastructure.

In the process, Boschert noted that CPU follows safety and tree health guidelines set by the American National Standards Institute to ensure the work is done responsibly and with long-term system health in mind.

Since 2018, CPU has invested some $2 million in various projects designed to keep the lights on for customers. These include replacing poles, trimming trees, installing new switches and mitigating lightning strikes—all aimed at minimizing outages, improving service and laying the foundation for future technologies.

“We are committed to providing safe, reliable, and affordable service,” Boschert said. “Proactive vegetation management is just one more way we’re working to deliver on that promise.”

Trimming trees also helps prevent animals, like squirrels and birds, from coming into contact with energized equipment—another common cause of outages. To further minimize wildlife damage, CPU has installed protective materials and devices on poles and equipment.

Clarksdale Public Utilities encourages property owners to avoid planting trees that could grow too close to power lines. A mature height of less than 15 feet is recommended for any trees planted near utility lines to reduce future maintenance needs and the potential for service disruptions.

“As we continue to invest in our electrical system, our New Generations initiative is key to meeting Clarksdale’s needs,” said Boschert. “We have a long history of serving this community, and we are committed to continuing that legacy so our children and grandchildren will have a great place to live and work.”

CPU will continue to provide updates on the project as work progresses.
