Mylar balloons can add a festive touch to celebrations. But did you know they can cause power outages? With summer cookouts and parties underway, Clarksdale Public Utilities reminds everyone to keep them tethered.
Offered in a variety of shapes and popular patterns, these shiny, metallic balloons affect thousands of electric customers each year when they float into power lines. In addition to causing outages, these balloons also can put utility crews in harm’s way as they are being removed from power lines.
“While we do not experience as many disruptions as some larger markets do, mylar balloons still can pose a threat to our system,” said Curtis D. Boschert, CPU general manager. “Whether released as part of a celebration or because they slipped out of someone’s hand, they can short out the line when they come into contact with electrical equipment, leading to downed wires, outages, fires and injuries.”
Unlike latex balloons, these metallic balloons can stay inflated and continue floating through the air much longer. To reduce the chances of them getting away, follow these simple tips this summer and all year-round:
If a balloon does get tangled in a power line, do not attempt to retrieve it. Always assume lines are energized, stay at least 10 feet away and report it by CPU at 662-627-8499.
“We also remind everyone not to fly kites or other outdoor toys close to utility equipment,” said Boschert. “When playing outdoors with kites, remote-control aircraft or other toys, be sure to pick a wide-open field that is free of trees and power lines. Check with local authorities for any other restrictions, and never fly them in the rain or during electrical storms.”
