Weather the Heat with Smarter Utility Use

CPU encourages simple steps to reduce strain on utility systems—and your wallet

With triple-digit temperatures pushing air conditioners and irrigation systems into overdrive, Clarksdale Public Utilities is reminding customers that elevated summer demand for electricity and water often leads to higher monthly bills.

“When the heat index climbs and stays high day and night, it’s natural to see a spike in utility usage,” said Curtis D. Boschert, general manager of Clarksdale Public Utilities. “Air conditioning systems run longer to keep indoor temperatures comfortable, and many customers are also watering lawns more frequently. We want to help people stay cool, stay hydrated—and stay in control of their utility bills.”

CPU encourages customers to monitor their energy and water consumption and take advantage of available tools, including:

  • Levelized Billing takes an average of the past 12 months’ consumption and allows customers to pay a fixed amount each month. This option makes bill amounts consistent and is helpful for customers on budgets or fixed incomes. Customers must have an account for 12 months to qualify.
  • Pick-A-Due Date allows customers to choose when their payments are due. Timing bills with paychecks and other income sources helps ensure that funds are available when needed. This option is available for customers enrolled in automatic bank draft.
  • Flexible Payment Options – CPU offers due date extensions and payment arrangements to help customers stay on track financially during peak months.
  • PowerLine – CPU’s online portal gives customers complete control over their utility accounts and 24/7 secure access to their account information. Check balances, pay bills electronically and sign up for alerts to know when bills are due or past due.

In addition to account tools, CPU recommends simple, effective strategies to conserve:

Tips for Reducing Electricity Use

  • Set thermostats to 78°F or higher when home; even higher when away.
  • Use fans to circulate cool air efficiently.
  • Keep curtains and blinds closed during the day to block heat from the sun.
  • Service air conditioning systems regularly for peak performance.

Tips for Conserving Water

  • Water lawns early in the morning or late in the evening to reduce evaporation.
  • Use timers or moisture sensors on sprinkler systems to avoid overwatering.
  • Check for leaks in faucets, hoses, and irrigation systems.
“Our team is prepared to meet the higher demand that comes with summer,” Boschert said. “But we also want our customers to know we’re here to support them with information, programs, and personalized service. A few small changes can go a long way toward lowering bills without sacrificing comfort.”

Customers with questions or who need assistance managing their accounts are encouraged to call CPU at 662-627-8499, visit the office at 416 Third Street or access services online at www.cdpu.net.
