CPU Continues Building a Bright Future for Clarksdale

Improvement plan prioritizes reliability, innovation, customer focus

CLARKSDALE - Two years after unveiling the Bright Future initiative, Clarksdale Public Utilities remains focused on customer commitments by improving performance, enhancing service and delivering safe, reliable and affordable utilities to keep Clarksdale moving forward.

Introduced in 2019 as part of CPU’s 120th anniversary, Bright Future is a comprehensive strategy to increase customer satisfaction by addressing performance in three key areas — reliability, innovation and community focus.

“We are more committed than ever to serving the needs of our customers and community,” said Curtis D. Boschert, CPU general manager. “This past year, CPU built on our foundation of service by creating safer environments for employees and safer ways of interacting with customers in response to the pandemic. Our efforts kept utility services flowing reliably for Clarksdale while prioritizing health and safety in all of our operations.”

Reliability is a hallmark of CPU’s electrical service. CPU has upheld a reliability rate of over 99% over the last three years and reduced service interruptions, thanks to year-round tree-trimming, monthly line patrols and a robust preventive maintenance program. During storms, these efforts also help prevent outages by protecting the distribution system from falling trees and limbs.

Storm response is another CPU strength that supports system reliability. After last year’s Easter storm caused extensive damage to electric and water facilities throughout the city, CPU crews immediately got to work repairing lines, poles and pipes and restored service for customers quickly and safely.

In recent years, innovative service enhancements have included the upgraded Powerline customer web portal and CPU mobile app, both of which provide 24/7 account access and make it easier for customers to do business with CPU.

During a time of social distancing, CPU’s billing and payment programs also provided convenient, contact-free options for customers to manage their accounts. In addition to the online portal and mobile app, customers can pay bills in the cashier’s lobby at 416 Third Street, by mail, phone or bank draft or use the kiosk and drop box located next to the CPU’s building.

In the area of community focus, CPU expedited the process for bill-payment extensions last year to provide relief for customers facing financial hardships resulting from the pandemic. Customers are encouraged to contact CPU to work out payment-extension plans to keep their accounts in good standing.

CPU also offers programs such as Pick Your Due Date and Levelized Billing at no charge to help customers better manage their utility expenses and household budgets. Through the Simple Steps campaign, CPU provides seasonal tips to help customers improve energy efficiency and reduce heating and cooling costs.

To keep up with the latest service offerings and improvements, customers can visit CPU’s website or connect with CPU on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube. Customers who have questions or need assistance in signing up for online accounts and other services are encouraged to contact CPU at 662-627-8499.

“By staying true to our Bright Future commitments, CPU is prepared to meet our customers’ current and future needs while upholding the values that have made us successful for the past 122 years,” Boschert said. “We are grateful for the opportunity to serve our customers, and we will continue being trustworthy and responsible stewards of their utility system.”
